The Upper Midwest Law Center is excited to announce Richard “Rick” Morgan has joined the organization as Senior Litigation Counsel, bringing more than 40 years of experience in trial litigation, federal prosecution, complex civil litigation, white collar investigations, and military justice.
Morgan has tried more than 50 cases to verdict and has held senior litigation roles at several national law firms, including Husch Blackwell, Lewis Brisbois Bisgaard & Smith, and Bowman and Brooke, where he also served as Minneapolis office managing partner and held firmwide leadership roles.
“Rick Morgan brings seasoned litigation judgment, deep courtroom experience, and a long record of public service to UMLC,” said Doug Seaton, President of the Upper Midwest Law Center. “As our docket continues to grow, his experience trying cases, handling complex investigations, and working in both federal prosecution and private practice will be a tremendous asset to our clients and our mission.”
Earlier in his career, Morgan served as an Assistant United States Attorney in the criminal division of the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Minnesota, handling cases involving fraud, drugs, environmental crimes, and criminal matters arising on the Red Lake Reservation. He also served as a Captain in the U.S. Army Judge Advocate General’s Corps at Fort Devens in Massachusetts, where he handled courts-martial and served as a Special Assistant U.S. Attorney.
Morgan also has deep roots in Minnesota’s legal, civic, and academic communities. He served on federal judicial selection committees at the invitation of U.S. Senator Norm Coleman and Congressman Erik Paulsen, helping select Chief Judge Patrick J. Schiltz and soon-to-be Chief Judge Eric C. Tostrud. He has also served as an adjunct professor at the University of Minnesota Law School, past president of the University of Minnesota Hubert H. Humphrey School of Public Affairs Alumni Association, a board member of Urban Impact Ministries, a member of the Board of Advisors at the University of Minnesota Law School, and host of the Face to Face public affairs program for Twin Cities Public Television.
Morgan has repeatedly been recognized as a Minnesota Super Lawyer, one of the Best Lawyers in America, a Benchmark Litigation Local Litigation Star, and in Who’s Who Legal, among other honors.
“I am honored to join the Upper Midwest Law Center and contribute to its important work defending constitutional rights, challenging unlawful government action, and holding public officials accountable,” said Morgan. “UMLC is taking on serious, high-impact cases, and I look forward to helping advance that mission in the courtroom.”
Morgan earned his law degree from the University of Minnesota Law School, a master’s degree from the University of Minnesota’s Humphrey School of Public Affairs, and a bachelor’s degree from Cornell University.
