Join Our Team: Senior Litigation Attorney

Are you an experienced attorney with a passion for liberty and a desire to make a tangible difference? The Upper Midwest Law Center (UMLC) is seeking a Senior Litigation Attorney to join our dedicated team in suburban Minneapolis.

About the Upper Midwest Law Center: Founded in 2019 by seasoned labor and employment attorney Doug Seaton, UMLC is a center-right, non-profit, public interest law firm. We initiate pro-freedom litigation to protect individuals and businesses against government overreach, special interest agendas, Constitutional violations, and public union corruption. We proudly provide free legal representation to those impacted by these critical issues.

About the Role: We are looking for a highly experienced, innovative, and detail-oriented senior attorney who loves the rule of law. As a Senior Litigation Attorney, you will be instrumental in spearheading multiple cases, managing your own docket, conducting witness interviews, preparing for and conducting depositions, handling discovery, drafting pleadings and briefs, arguing cases in state and federal courts, and guiding junior-level attorneys. This is your opportunity to leverage your passion to help more people across Minnesota and the Upper Midwest who have been harmed by government failures, public sector union abuse, deprivations of First Amendment rights (speech, religious liberty), and other U.S. and state constitutional rights.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Brainstorm and spearhead new cases critical to UMLC’s mission.
  • Conduct thorough legal research and interview clients and witnesses.
  • Draft compelling pleadings, motions, and briefs for trial and appellate courts.
  • Prepare for and conduct written discovery and depositions.
  • Argue hearings before state and federal trial and appellate courts.
  • Interact with media regarding cases and issues.
  • Manage workloads and cases, working collaboratively with law clerks and other attorneys.
  • Report to and work under the direction of the President and General Counsel.

Qualifications:

  • Juris Doctorate (JD) degree from an accredited law school.
  • Active bar membership in Minnesota, or eligibility to join the Minnesota bar by motion or UBE score (refer to MN Rule 7).
  • Minimum of 6 years of experience with a strong litigation background.
  • Exceptional communication, negotiation, and interpersonal skills.
  • Proven ability to excel in a fast-paced environment and collaborate effectively.
  • Adept at synthesizing complex legal information for non-legal audiences and donors.
  • Proficiency with legal software (e.g., Clio).
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and strategic thinking capabilities.
  • Ability to travel up to 10%.
  • Preferred experience leading other attorneys.

Location, Compensation, and Benefits: This is a full-time, hybrid position based in UMLC’s Minneapolis, MN office, requiring at least two days per week in-office. The projected annual salary ranges from $150,000 – $175,000, commensurate with skills and experience. UMLC offers a comprehensive benefits package, including:

  • Flexible work environment with partial remote work availability.
  • Employer-paid health, dental, and vision insurance.
  • Health Savings Account (HSA).
  • 403(b) retirement plan.
  • Discretionary bonus.
  • Paid Time Off (PTO).

To Apply: Qualified candidates should submit the following application materials (in order) in one single PDF document:

  1. Cover letter including:
    • An introductory paragraph(s) describing three distinct reasons you are drawn to Upper Midwest Law Center’s mission and how you came to those beliefs.
