Martha Astor and Andrew “AJ” Gubash join UMLC as the organization continues growing its constitutional litigation work
The Upper Midwest Law Center announced two new additions to its growing legal team: Martha A. Astor, who joins as Trial Counsel, and Andrew “AJ” Gubash, who joins as Paralegal.
The new hires come as UMLC continues to expand its docket of high-impact cases involving constitutional rights, government accountability, religious liberty, free speech, election integrity, and the rule of law.
Astor brings extensive litigation experience in state and federal courts, including work on constitutional law, First Amendment matters, election law, education policy, administrative law, and Title IX litigation. She previously served as an attorney with the Defense of Freedom Institute, Institute for Free Speech, and Goldwater Institute. Her experience includes work on a successful 9-0 U.S. Supreme Court decision involving Title IX claims, along with state and federal appellate litigation, amicus briefing, and policy work. She is a graduate of Notre Dame Law School and serves as a designated neutral arbitrator with the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority.
Gubash brings a strong background in legal studies, public policy, military service, and civic engagement. He earned his bachelor’s degree in legal studies from Hamline University, where he graduated Phi Beta Kappa, and is currently pursuing a master’s degree in the study of law. His experience includes service as a U.S. Army infantryman and work with The Heritage Foundation as a government relations intern. He has also served in leadership with Turning Point USA at Hamline University and volunteers with the Minnesota Warriors Ice Hockey Program.
“Martha and AJ each bring valuable experience, energy, and commitment to UMLC’s mission at an important time for our organization,” said Doug Seaton, President and Founder of the Upper Midwest Law Center. “Martha’s background in constitutional litigation, appellate advocacy, and liberty-focused legal work strengthens our ability to take on complex cases. AJ’s military service, legal education, and public policy experience will help support our fast-moving docket. We are pleased to welcome them both to the team.”
Together, Astor and Gubash will support UMLC’s work representing individuals, businesses, and organizations in cases challenging unlawful government action and defending constitutional liberties.
